Explaining Firefly

For various reasons, I needed to quickly explain to colleagues the symbols in “Firefly”.

“OK, so the main character has lost in a war, which is like the civil war, so he doesn’t like the government. The battle that turned the tide, according to consensus, is the Battle of Serenity Valley. The character named his character after it, ‘Serenity’, because ‘it was the losing side, not sure it was the wrong side.’ In the movie they hurt the government by posting on wikileaks evidence on how the government through good intentions but ham-fisted execution created the biggest terrorist organization.”
